Here are
a few tips for designing those pages that you want to place well in the
search engines:
- In designing
your home page, target a single keyword phrase. Often you can
get three or possibly four keyword phrases in the page to work, but
focus on getting one to work well. It should be a popular phrase
that is
often
used
in
searching
but has few competing web sites. The work in addition phrases that
might
provide additional paths into the site. Know the competition level
for the phrase and how often people use it in searching the Internet.
- If you
wish other entry points to your site, set up other pages with their
relevant keyword phrases and design those pages to target those keyword
phrases. Minimize the use of gateway pages (pages without incoming
links) if you use them at all. Most of
the
entrance pages to my sites are not the home pages, but into the pages
further down. They aren't gateway pages, however, my site has links
to them.
- Keep the
page design simple. Don't use frames, image maps, and JavaScript for
linking without a backup site map. Keep your body text with your keyword
phrases near the top of the page.
- The lead
paragraph on the page is important for the search engine. Keep it strong
with your keyword phrase and related words. At the same time, it has
to catch and hold the user.
- Keep text
count of the page up. You should have at least 300 words on a page for
good positioning. Vertical scrolling is fine, but don't force horizontal
scrolling. The page should not exceed 100kb..
- Structure
your site to the benefits of the user, using hierachical menu design
from from the general to the specific.
