Link and Search Engine Optimization Strategies for Google

Understanding how Google ranks your pages is essential for good ranking in Google. Here are some technologies Google uses:

Google's PageRank™ - a proprietary and trademarked system for ranking pages in the search engine. This was the technology that launched Google's claim to fame.

Latent Semantic Indexing - a patented technology that allows Google to find pages related to a specified search topic without those pages necessarily containing the search term you used.

Google Sandbox - a filtering system (sometimes called an aging filter) used to put new sites in a "sandbox" area after they've been up a week or two. Google can play with them in this area until they are trusted. New sites appear to stay in this sandbox for about 6-8 months. During this time the ranking of your site can vary (dance), but doesn't really get very good. The Sandbox strategy implies new sites can't be trusted. The strategy does, however, weed out the mom & pop sites that come up on the Internet and then disappear.

Before we begin, let's say something important. The three primary search engines (in terms of traffic) are Google, Yahoo, and MSN in that order. Google gets 33 to over 50 percent of the search market. These numbers vary with time and which organization is getting the numbers. Google is a major leader in the market and always scores high if not the highest.

From that, you might get the idea to really focus hard on Google and let the other search engines slide. That's dangerous. In November of 2003 Google did a major change in their positioning algorithm (the Famous Florida Dance), dropping many commercial sites positioned for Christmas shopping to low positions, with many disappearing entirely from the engine. If these same companies had more efficiently targeted over multiple engines, they would have been much better protected. Don't risk your business to the whims of a single engine. Moreover, although Google will probably give you the most referrals, you will probably find most of your conversions are from MSN.
