If your
site isn't showing up in the search engines after submission or in the
engines but down in the back forty, here are some possibilities to check:
- Did you
wait long enough? Most search engines can take 4-6 weeks or longer before
you will see your listing. With some engines it can take months. Google
uses an "aging filter" for new sites - after a short 2-3 week
exposure your site may drop or dance in position for 6-8 months. Know
the expected time delay with the search engine you submitted to and
wait at least that much time.
- Is there
at least one existing link to your site from a high-quality page (high
PageRank page) already on the search engine? Most engines won't index
your site until this is true.
- Was
your server was down when search engine's bot came around? This is
probably one of the most common causes. If the server is too slow
or doesn't respond at all, the spider assumes your site no longer
exists. If this happens your site is no longer in the search engine
at all.
- Did you
violate some rules of the search engine? If you did, this is called
spamindexing and you need to fix it. For example, did you do keyword
stuffing or other tricks to try to gain a position? In that case the
spider will refuse to add you.

Remember
that the entire positioning process with a search engine is automatic
and varies with the search engine. If you are failing the placement,
you need to understand the rules of that search engine better. Also,
you need to discern if you are in the engine but just way, way down
or not in the engine at all.
Remember
also that placement is a dynamic process. You can have a good position
one day and a poor position the next. You have to constantly monitor your
position.
