Here is the
basic optimization strategy for positioning your site in the search engine.
Keep in mind that the true process is non-linear and cyclic. Here are
the basic steps:
- Define
your keywords and keyword phrases for the pages of your site you wish
to optimize. Try to choose phrases that are used often in queries but
have a minimum of competition. Also try to use keyword phrases that
will qualify people coming to your site.
- If your
site is already in the engines, determine your rankings, the links into
your site, and traffic. These are benchmark values you will use to evaluate
your success.
- Design
your pages so that the search engines will optimize on those keyword
phrases. Use tools to objectively measure the quality of your pages
as seen by the search engines.
- Define
your competition for your keyword phrases. Often tools used in step
1 or 2 can define these. Otherwise, simply search in a major search
engine to see who are the leaders for your keyword phrase.
- Quickly
force at least one external link to your site in Google and be sure
Google has found this updated page. A good possibility here is the DMOZ
directory, a local online business directory, or a directory for your
category.
- Submit
your site to the search engines and directories. This step, however,
has questionable value. It won't hurt you, however.
- Study
the links into your competitor sites. Negotiate and add reciprocal
links as
appropriate.
- Monitor
your progress. Study the results. Modify your keyword phrases and redesign
as necessary and repeat.
