Capture your Market with Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is the use of marketing techniques that use existing social networks to achieve a marketing goal such as selling a product, service, or vision. The strategy is to use self-replicating viral processes.

The marketing strategy was there well before the Internet with such companies as Amway and Shaklee that have used multilevel marketing to sell products within a circle of friends. Basically, the strategy is to encourage users of the products or services to be evangelists for the same product or service.

In some cases, the selling is less visible and there is no “evangelism” involved. One example is of this less visible strategy is Hotmail.com. They market by adding a simple tag “Get your private, free email at http:///www.hotmail.com” at the bottom of each email through their servers. Their advertising propagates through their entire email system with each email sent using their servers.

The general concept of viral marketing is also known as “word-of-mouth”, leveraging the media”, or perhaps “network marketing”. In its most recent form, it involves using blogs or the social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and others to create a buzz. At its simplest form, you set up a profile on the social network with a pointer to your web site. That doesn’t create the buzz, however. You have to go in and actively participate in the dialog to do your evangelism. You have to involve the emotions, get people excited, and make them want to join your vision.
