Designing Tables for Search Engine Optimization

When creating web pages, layout control is done using tables. Typical page designs can have many levels of tables, with more tables nested inside of cells of tables nested inside of cells of tables.

This page uses a farily common design, with a table of a single row with two columns. The problem with this is that when the search engine scans a page that is normally designed this way, there is a problem with optimization. The source code of the left column, which contains very little text and advertising, comes before the code for the second column which contains the content that is important for search engine optimization. Since the content code is pushed down in the source code listing, it doesn't drive the optimization as strong as it should.

Now look at the source code for this page (View | Source on the IE6 browser). The table area in the code is marked with comment statements. Notice that the layout is tricked in a way that the right column content comes before the left column in the source code listing. This dramatically improves the optimization for the page in the search engines.

If you wish to try this with your pages, simply copy the table source code to your page and then edit the contents of each column for you own needs. Then order our book for more tips from the SEO masters.
