One of the problems with tables is that the content is often in a right column with navigation buttons at the left. This page shows an example of this. As a result, all of the left column material (including the advertisements in this case) falls ahead of the content in the source code. The search engines then see the material in the left column as having more prominence and indexes on it. You want the engines to index on the content material in the right column - i.e., give the right column content prominence.
If you check the source code for this page, you will see how to create tables that put the right column content up ahead of that left column in your source code. This will dramatically improve your ranking. Copy the source code for the table that's marked with comment lines to your page, then paste this table to your own web page. Then be sure to edit the columns in your page to your content.
