The Shine is Off the Apple

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Apple Computers is apparently changing the innovative marketing strategy that has worked so well in the past. Guy Kawasaki pioneered the marketing evangelism strategy there in which the company sells a dream - not a computer. Others are drawn into the dream and they, in turn, share the dream with others. When others act on this you have conversion - and computer sales.

In the latest turn of events, it looks like you can get in trouble if you get too excited on the dream and sharing it. Nick Ciarelli, who started his Apple web site Think Secret at the tender age of 13, has become famous for sharing various product announcements before Apple does their public announcement. Apple has launched a lawsuit on Nick, asking for damages. Apple Computer is also launching lawsuits on two other sites for similar reasons.

Come on, Apple Computer. If you can’t keep your fly zipped don’t blame it on someone else - in this case a college kid.

Four Freedoms of the Internet

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Michael Powell, former head of the FCC, outlined what he considered the four freedoms of the Internet customer. This is now known as the Powell Doctrine, and is already affecting legal decisions about the freedom of the VoIP, or Voice-Over-IPs. Here are those freedoms:

  1. Customers have the freedom to access legal content
  2. Customers have the freedom to use the legal applications of their choice
  3. Customers have the freedom to attach personal devices
  4. Customers have the freedom to obtain meaningful service plan information

In other words, it is the responsibility of the ISPs to provide innovation for better service, not to innovate for ways to destroy their competition.

Blogging Your Mission

“Freedom of the Press Belongs to Those Who Own One”
A. J. Liebling (1904-1963)

For the first time in history, the price of the press is effectively zero. How does that affect the flow of information in the culture?

Blogging gives you a press at near zero cost. A blog is an Internet online journal that offer running commentary or information in a dynamic way. They are updated frequently (sometimes several times a day) and are quickly having a major cultural impact in politics, religion, business, and other areas. Each blog is maintained by one to three people, usually one. Adding a blog to a site makes it dynamic, drawing your visitors with return visits and encouraging their interaction. Use it to build relationships.

We can easily add a blog to the sites we design. See more information at http://www.netadventures.biz/webdesignblog.htm.

Google Sandbox Confirmed

Saturday, April 16th, 2005

Google has recently filed for patents on several methods used in its ranking algorithm. These patents confirm the existance of the Google Sandbox.

The Sandbox is an effect that many search engine optimizers have observed. When a new site is submitted to Google, it will position itself well for a week or so, then drop dramatically or even disappear for 6-8 months. In effect, Google has put it in a Sandbox area where it can play with it. This is also called an aging filter. Google says this is done to provide stability in the search results, preventing short-term mom & pop sites from dominating the results. More realistically, however, it prevents SEOs from using web rings and other related tricks to force top listings.
