Free web site

Monday, May 9th, 2005

Want a free five-page web site for your business? If you post a free listing in Yahoo’s local directory Yahoo will give you a free five-page web site for your business. For more information, see: http://listings.local.yahoo.com/.

Caution: You should check your local listing in all the search engines and be sure these are correct. The listings are often automatic from the yellow pages and may not be correct. Our latest newsletter has the addresseses (URLs) for these, and our SEO book has a longer list. As for the free web site (and this tip goes for any type of free site), be sure the free site that’s posted is not in frames. To do this, check the source code of the final site in your browser and be sure it’s what you expect. Otherwise, the search engines can’t find the site. Sites from DSL and cable hosts often pull this trick. Also, what happens if Yahoo changes the rules of the game later and it’s no longer free. This is still a great offer if you don’t have a web site. Get your feet in the water and see what you learn!

Edward R. Tufte, when asked to summarize the goal of his work, said “Simple Design, intense content“. That’s a great summary statement for web design. If you want to see your web site rank and visitor traffic soar, avoid the splash screens and stick to rich, dynamic content with plenty of incoming links. Content rules.

Tufte should know. The New York Times calls him the “da Vinci of data” because of Tufte’s ability to see through complex information to rich and meaningful conclusions. For more information, see the April 2005 issue of Scientific American, p. 38.
